New shoots - late January back garden

I'd expect snowdrops to be at their best in late January but was a bit surprised that aquilegia are already appearing above the ground too. The niger hellebore and lenten roses are putting on their usual fine display.Cutting out all of the non flowering stems at the turn of the year helps show off the new buds and also seems to give new seedlings room to develop.

You are spot on to cut back the leaves of your hellebores in December. Not only for the reasons you state but also because old leaves often harbour infective spores of fungal leaf spots and leaf blotches which might infect the new growth.
And isn't it wonderful how new seedlings now in December are germinating like mustard and cress!

Oh, yes, I see what you mean - very similar subject matter! Your Hellebores are much further on than mine. I have some "Soleil d'Or" daffodils showing some colour now.

I'm waiting in anticipation for the hellebore and snowdrop area to come into it's own,
